History of Bridge Preparatory Charter School: A Learning Differences School

Bridge Preparatory Charter School opened in September 2019. We are the first and only public school in New York State to accommodate students with learning differences, making us one of the best schools for dyslexia. Students with learning differences require inclusive, personalized courses, and Bridge Preparatory Charter School wants to fill this gap through free, accessible education.

We serve students with a variety of learning differences, like dyslexia, throughout the Staten Island and New York City area. However, our school is not just reserved for those with learning differences. We are a free public school, meaning students of all learning levels can attend. Our Science of Reading curriculum is based on research-backed methods like the Orton-Gillingham approach and meets the needs of students with many academic needs.

Bridge Preparatory Charter School creates programs for students who struggle to learn in a traditional classroom setting. Through unique coursework and longer school days, students receive the assistance they need to learn and grow efficiently. Students can access all this and more without leaving the Staten Island/NYC area.

General Information

What is a charter school?

A Charter school is an independently run public school that is granted greater flexibility in its operations, design, and school structure in return for greater accountability for academic performance. Charter schools are schools of choice, allowing parents the opportunity to choose a school based upon what they think will work best for their child and provide an alternative to traditional district schools.

No. As a public school, open to all students, our students reflect a diverse mix of academic ability levels. Bridge Prep welcomes all students and families from Staten Island and our instructional and inclusionary school design is beneficial for students at all ability levels.

Bridge Prep was founded to offer a unique educational option for students who are better served outside the traditional school setting, especially those students struggling with dyslexia and other language based learning needs. While we anticipate some students may enter Bridge Prep needing improvements in literacy development, our curriculum and instructional diversity is structured to serve students of all ability levels.

Does Bridge Prep have free breakfast and lunch like other public schools?

Does Bridge Prep offer student busing?

Like other public schools, students at Bridge Prep may qualify for busing through the Department of Education’s Office of Pupil Transportation. Transportation eligibility is determined on the basis of the student’s grade level and distance between the student’s residence and the school. If a student does not qualify for a school bus, they may be eligible for a full-fare or half-fare MetroCard. Otherwise, a family member or friend must drop off and pick up their student each day.

Any student receiving special education services that are receiving transportation will remain eligible busing according to their IEP.
